Financial Therapy

Laptop on a wooden table in a cozy living room.

Hot take: Money is not all about numbers. It's actually quite emotional.

In fact, emotions and psychology play a huge role in our finances. And frankly, how we feel about money is often unrelated how much we have in the bank.

We’re all influenced by the way our parents, friends, and others view money. You may have unconscious beliefs about how money should be earned, saved, or spent. Money may mean something different for you than it does for your partner, or your family. Messages from childhood, culture, and society could be influencing your money behaviors, without you even knowing it.

You may overspend to cope with sadness or seek joy. You might pinch pennies due to fear of scarcity, or hoard money because of past financial trauma. You might look into saving and investing, but give up due to overwhelm or confusion. Maybe you avoid money topics because they cause guilt, stress, or shame.

On the flip side, financial anxiety may lead you to obsess about money. Conflicting financial beliefs can lead to disagreements with your partner. You may people-please with money due to feelings of guilt or obligation - whether you can afford to or not. And even if you have what others consider “plenty of money”, it still may not feel like enough.

Our money behaviors and beliefs can be super illogical. But they don’t have to be!

Financial challenges often come with a lot of guilt & shame. It might seem easier to avoid it. But deep down, you know that isn’t sustainable. Therapy offers an understanding space to unpack your struggles and find solutions.

Financial therapy can help you to:

  • Explore your relationship with money and its impact on your mental health
  • Identify “money stories” learned from family or financial trauma
  • Shift your emotions & beliefs related to money
  • Gain control over your financial habits
  • Set financial boundaries with yourself & others
  • Learn healthier ways to talk about finances with others

This is a good fit for:

  • Young professionals seeking clarity and focus for their finances
  • Those going through financial transitions (i.e. job changes, retirement, marriage, divorce, inheritance)
  • Self-employed individuals with fluctuating income
  • Folks who are stressed about their debt or spending habits
  • High-net-worth individuals
  • Folks in relationships with mismatched financial habits/beliefs

The results:

Through financial therapy, I can help you to understand your beliefs around money. You’ll gain the tools to take control of your habits, manage your emotions, and build a healthier relationship with your finances. You'll develop a deeper understanding of how family dynamics or financial trauma have shaped your relationship with money. Our work will empower you to break free from limiting beliefs and old patterns.

Now, here's the thing:

Therapy will not remove ALL emotions or worries about money, and it won’t fix complex financial issues overnight. However, this work can help you to manage your feelings about money so you can make better choices. By understanding your emotions and shifting your beliefs, you can in turn change your financial behaviors.
